Replanting the Historic Lime Avenue at Cobham Hall, 28th November

On Saturday the 28th November, the first day of National Tree-Planting Week, a group of Friends of Cobham Hall and other volunteers gathered to replant the Lime Avenue left by Humphrey Repton at this historic garden nearly 200 years ago. There are now quite a few gaps in the double avenue, including a large number of trees blown down in the 1987 storm.

During a very enjoyable morning, 50 standard Tilia ‘Euchlora’ were carefully planted, staked and rabbit-guarded. On such a cold morning, coffee and chicken soup was very welcome after all our hard work!

Another hole, another tree…

Now the hole has been dug to fit around the tree roots with room to spare and the stake has been sited, putting the tree to the stake…

Will this spiral be enough to deter the rabbits… or the deer?
